laugh with us (or at us, either way is fine) :)

Earlier today, Floyd and I went out for a walk, just enjoying some time together (the kids are at my mom's for the weekend) and we enjoyed some random conversation. I have no idea what brought it up, but we recalled a funny memory from last summer.

While we were in Uganda, there were a few times that we went into the capital, Kampala. There was a grocery store that we visited a couple of times for supplies and another shopping mart on the route to Victory Living Word church. On the occasions that we went into the city, we would all pick out a soda to enjoy. This was nice for two reasons, 1) it was a nice treat (especially because soda in Uganda does not have high fructose corn syrup or numerous artificial ingredients) AND 2) with no refrigeration, our normal drink (water) was never very cold, so a cold soda from the shopping mart was fabulous!

On one of our few trips, we noticed that they had a few different size bottles, and the largest bottles were actually only a few cents more than the small ones. Since we didn't have soda that often and the drive to the city was a couple of hours long, we determined that the larger bottle made great sense because it would last all day and you got more for your money.

Now here's where it gets funny. The second time we got these large bottles, we were actually spending the night in Kampala. As we sat around that evening, I noticed the label of the bottles. They were 2 LITERS!!! Can you imagine sitting around with your friends in the US drinking out of a 2 liter bottle? I can only imagine what other people thought when they saw us. We must have looked ridiculous! Fortunately, where we were staying, it was culturally offensive to walk around drinking any soda or other drinks, so not many people saw us. Sodas and such were expected to be drank inside, like at a restaurant or at home, because they are not a luxury that everyone can afford.

Now, in our defense, these bottles were not shaped like a 2 liter bottle here. They were actually shaped perfectly for drinking right out of the bottle, so we never really noticed. Of course, we also had Ugandan friends (including our driver) who also drank from these bottles. Perhaps they did so because that's what we purchased, but nevertheless, it is a funny memory for us.

We laugh every time we think of ourselves drinking out of 2 liter soda bottles. It's a good thing that was a rare treat (like it only happened twice, maybe 3 times). :)
