A vacation...what's that???

First, some of this post is probably completely unnecessary, but we really like to be completely transparent with every area of our lives (and we're totally excited!). In the age of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. it makes the most sense to just provide extra information and over explain, unless you just don't post anything to any social media.

So, what are we so excited about...
In 2009 we went camping for Spring Break. That was our last vacation. You see, just a few months later Floyd was sitting in church on a normal Sunday morning when God told him he had to go to Uganda. He was taken completely by surprise, but that's when the journey began.

Since that time, every day of vacation time and some sick time has gone to cover Floyd's time in Uganda. Of course, he also had plenty of days that he didn't get paid for during the trips, but never the less, he simply didn't have the option to take time off the rest of the year. Also, every extra bit of money went to our mission costs.

As we prepare to move to Uganda in just a few months, many friends told us that we should take some time as a family to do something fun and relaxing. Since we moved out of our house in good standing, the landlord gave us our full deposit back and we sold most of what we owned in our moving sale. So, with that information, we finally took their suggestion and looked into options.

Boy, were we surprised! We were able to book round-trip airfare, 2 nights hotel in California, and a 4 night cruise leaving from Long Beach all for less than $200 per person! The biggest savings came from being able to travel in October while most children are in school. Since we home school, that's not a problem. The next big savings came from being able to use rewards points/miles for airfare and hotel.

Even before we went camping in 2009, we had only been on one other vacation. In 2003, we went to Port Aransas for a few days. Our boys' first airplane rides were their first trip to Uganda. Even Floyd and I have never been on a cruise, or even to California. Needless to say, we are totally surprised and excited about our upcoming trip!

I share this with you because we don't want there to be any confusion when you see posts of us heading off on vacation next month. We totally believe that God's workers should be able to get away for relaxation and family time just like everyone else, so we don't feel that we have to defend anything. But we also know that we are in the position of raising financial support and beginning a new adventure for ourselves and many of our supporters, so we want to leave no room for doubt.

We are grateful that the Lord has given us this opportunity for some totally new experiences!
