During our last few days at Bulondo’s (the hotel), one of
our tasks was to prepare our water filtration system. We were given some water
filters from a ministry in the US. I wish I could say more as to who they are
to give them credit, but I truthfully don’t know. Pastor Rafe gave them our
contact info and Floyd and the gentleman arranged to meet at the church a few
days before we left the US. They do not charge for the filters and accompanying
supplies. We just met him at the church, he gave us the supplies and some directions,
and said that they were provided by the Lord.
We thought we could get simple filtering cans here in Uganda
because we had seen them at a ministry on a previous trip. Unfortunately, we
learned that they order them online in the US and bring them over.
Not to worry, we just put our minds to work. Every time we
drive to the property, we pass this place that sells a variety of plastic
containers with spouts. We decided to get crafty and because of the directions
given from the man who gave us the filters, we knew we could make it work. We
bought two of the black containers. Unfortunately, this did mean that the man
had to climb to the top and throw them down to us. Since some of them had structural
issues, he was up there for a while.
When we got back to Bulondo’s , we got to work. Floyd had
already purchased a drill. So, we matched up one lid with one can and drilled
four holes through them. The filters go in the top container, with a rubber
sealer that goes on the back side of the screw. The screw is actually a plastic
piece that is hollow. The water comes through the filter and drips down the
plastic screw. It is dripping into the lower container. So, when we use the
spout to get water from the lower container it is completely clean and pure. If
we do need to drain the top, we can just open that spout and there is no mess.
It is working wonderfully well. It doesn’t remove the odd flavor, but the water
is completely safe. When you cook with it or make tea, the taste is not
noticeable.
