a little taste of America...or close enough anyway

This morning we got up and prepared for church, as is our usual Sunday routine. We realized that we had not ordered breakfast before we went to bed last night. Since we had to leave for church on time, we could not order breakfast. We've told you about the usual 1-1.5 hour minimum wait for any meal, even something as simple as an egg. So, we went to church having not eaten.

Church ended just before 2 pm, but we visited with a few friends and waited for Pastor Johnson to do some work, so we got dropped off at the hotel about 2:15. Our car is still at the shop (that's a totally different story), so we couldn't just drive ourselves somewhere. There is a large group of Olympic athletes sharing our hotel and they had just began their meal, so there was no room in the dining area for us. We asked the driver to take us to Garden City where we could get food. He told us he had to complete one task that would be 15 minutes, and then we could go. When he returned after 1.25 hours, we loaded up for the ride.

Now, a few months ago I had seen a news article stating that KFC had opened up a few locations in Uganda, one near the airport and one in the capital. I had not thought any more about it, but guess what we found?! When searching for a specific type of ATM, we found the KFC in the mall right next to a familiar place known as Garden City.

Now, remember that I told you we had not eaten breakfast. It was now 5pm and we had not had lunch either. If we had been fasting for a reason, I could live with that, but when we just hadn't had access to food by 5 pm, everyone was hungry! We could not resist the opportunity to try out this Ugandan KFC.

We placed our order and waited for our food.

Much to our surprise, it was true to KFC fashion. Our meals were ready in just a few minutes. Can you believe it? This is the first meal that we didn't wait nearly 2 hours or more for in the last 2 weeks.

Yes, it was very tasty. You had two drink options, Coke or Novida (a common drink here). We opted for the cold Cokes. The flavor was actually true to KFC (at least from what I remember), especially the brown gravy.

We all finished our food with much delight.
During this time, I kept thinking, "What would Lisa say?" Now, Lisa is a long time friend, my big sister really, and she is a very healthy eater. She would definitely not approve of the Coke, and I'm pretty sure she'd say KFC is a no go. However, I think she would forgive the KFC on the grounds that I'm on the other side of the world and this is just one meal. Not to mention that it was actually our only meal for the day!

Either way, it was a fun little excursion and it made up for the fact that we had to miss playing volleyball with our friends at Victory Living Word Church. We were invited to play late this afternoon, but due to not having transportation, we didn't make it. Everyone was bummed about that. :/
