the ever elusive running water...

Most people have been waiting to hear that we have water at our house. We've had rain water in our cistern, which has worked similar to a well, but we have not been able to use any plumbing.
Well, about a month ago, we asked the local welder if he knew a plumber. Sure enough, he did.

A man named Franco came the next day to see what we needed.

After losing it to a storm TWICE the welders built a nice metal cage to protect the above ground cistern. This will keep it from blowing off even when empty. Lifting it back up is no fun, so we'd rather not do it a 4th time.
The first pump never worked to pump any water, so we picked up a new one in Kampala. The plumber tried many things to get it to work. After still no luck, he tried just pumping water and determined that this pump was also bad. Fortunately, the place we bought gave us a refund. Franco went to the city to get a pump himself. Even then, the 3rd pump still didn't pull any water.
Thinking maybe there was a bad valve or connection, they had to bust through some of the concrete to get to the pipe.
That didn't solve any problem, so Franco went into the cistern. The hoe was used to help him reach the pipe as the cistern is too deep to stand in.
Guess what?! There is nothing on the end of the pipe. No filtering cap, no valve, nothing. I don't remember the correct word for the needed piece, but it wasn't there.

Unfortunately, even with that, this pump still doesn't work either.

Last solution, a submersible pump. Franco goes to town and buys a submersible pump. He sets up the proper piping, and ta-dah!!! we have pumping water!

Since that time, we've had running water. Franco then had to repair many leaking places and fix some small plumbing issues that weren't known before the water was flowing.

A week later, Franco came back and installed water heaters. We have a switch in the master bedroom to turn on a water heater for the two bathrooms. That water heater holds about 13.2 gallons of water. In the kitchen, there is another switch that turns on a water heater for the kitchen sink. That one holds about 4 gallons of water. Surprisingly, we've used them a few times and haven't run out of hot water yet. We didn't expect to have hot water at all, so we'll take whatever we can get! :)

Of course, a washing machine is also a HUGE blessing!
