prefects

In Ugandan schools they have prefects - these are children that are chosen by the staff to represent the children in various ways. I would say that it is similar to the student body, but it isn't elected by children. There are prefects that represent the different classes, prefects for language, for the dormitories, for boys and girls, for sports and activities, for dance and drama, and so on. There is also a head boy, a head girl, and a head prefect.
This is an honor for the child but it also means that child will have greater things expected of them. For example, we recently had some boys go outside the property fence to cut down a jack fruit. If they had asked permission and an adult knew where they were going, it would have been no problem. However, they didn't ask permission and just went on their own. Then when staff went to call them back, they ran and hid in the bush. So, when the punishment was issued, the prefects who had participated were given double the punishment of the other children because they are expected to set an example for others.

So, at the assembly introducing the prefects to the school, I took some photos. Here are the Wells of Joy prefects for 2016.

It's almost impossible to get one picture with everyone looking, so here's two different ones. :)
