Riverside fun...

While Raegan was here, we definitely had to visit the riverside here in Phnom Penh. The Mekong River runs along side the city and it's a popular area for spending time. The AIM Store is near the riverside and Raegan definitely wanted to get some goodies to take home (it's the retail store where we sell things made by survivors of trafficking who work in the AIM Employment Centers).
Of course, Raegan found lots of stuff and was trying on shirts and kimonos. The boys each picked a shirt and were ready to go. It was very hot and the boys were hungry, so I took them over a city block to get a special treat. I get these near my language school but the boys had never had the privilege of such a snack.
This is a pineapple. The vendor peels it, cuts out the little spots, and leaves the stem to be used as a handle. It is absolutely delicious and so easy to eat anywhere. Do keep in mind that these pineapples are much smaller than those in America. You can also have the vendor cut it into chunks. In that case, they give it to you in a plastic bag with some small sticks to poke a piece.
Even better, I've only paid between 50 and 75 cents for a pineapple prepared like this. Imagine if our kids had such easy access to these types of healthy & affordable snacks when they're hanging out around town in America.

This was a different day, but an example of the pineapple cut into chunks.
After visiting the store, we went for a walk along the Riverfront. There are groups of people doing aerobics, kids and adults playing football (soccer), people on bicycles, and lots of others just walking or sitting along the shore of the river.
There is one thing that caught my attention the first time I came to Cambodia for a visit. They have hydraulic exercise machines in certain areas for public use. It is a great place to work out. You are literally looking at the river and enjoying the sunshine while getting a work out without paying a gym. Now, I had to show the kids and try them out.

There was particular device that we all gave a try. For some reason it looked really funny, especially when Tyler did it. Maybe because his legs are so long. I don't know, but here's a video for your pleasure.

If you'd like to see some other views of the river, I posted another blog here.
